My Therapy

Helping people better manage their upsetting feelings (as well as the thoughts and bodily sensations that accompany them) – anger, anxiety, depression, pessimism and loneliness – is a form of disease prevention… helping people handle them better could potentially have a medical payoff as great as getting heavy smokers to quit”. – Daniel Goleman.

Emotion Focused Mindfulness Therapy (learning to deal with difficult thoughts and feelings), Logotherapy (finding meaning), together with a Jungian Approach (facing our shadow sides while learning to celebrate the light side) are the main focus of Dr Mariki Smith’s psychotherapy. She is also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) for Trauma work. Mindfulness (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction; Mindfulness Cognitive-Based Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) is her framework for understanding and treating the clients who invite her to share their sacred healing space.

“The major cause of stress in most of our lives today is a loss of meaning. Things change so quickly and so constantly, so many of our old certainties no longer apply, that we have lost our essential bearings…Meaninglessness and the stress to which it gives rise is the major cause of illness in the developed world today. Diseases like depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue syndrome, alcoholism, drug abuse and suicide are obviously stress-related… Stress depresses the human immune system’s ability to fight off any disease.” – D. Zohar & I. Marshall: Spiritual Capital

The meaning we bring to the transaction, the way we see it and hold it in awareness, our perspective as a whole, can determine whether a situation is labeled as stressful or not.” – Jon Kabat-Zinn
